Two days, four towns, one mountain
In 79 AD Mount Vesuvius erupted violently, burying the Roman towns of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplontis and Stabiae under layers of pumice and ash over roughly two days. A tall column of debris rose high into the sky for most of the first day, dropping several feet of pumice onto Pompeii, before a series of fast-moving, superheated flows of gas and ash swept down the mountain’s slopes on the second day, killing anyone still caught in their path. Excavation has recovered more than a thousand bodies at Pompeii and several hundred at Herculaneum, out of a combined population that numbered in the thousands, but the total death toll across the wider area is not known and estimates vary considerably. The long-accepted date of the eruption, 24 August, has come under sustained challenge from evidence pointing toward autumn instead.
A nephew’s letters, written decades later
The only surviving eyewitness account comes from Pliny the Younger, who was seventeen and watching from across the Bay of Naples, and who set down what he had seen in two letters to the historian Tacitus roughly a quarter of a century after the event. His uncle, Pliny the Elder, commanded the Roman fleet nearby and died during a rescue attempt, a death the younger Pliny first attributed to poisonous fumes, though a close reading of his own description points more plausibly to a stroke or heart attack given his uncle’s age and build. Everything else known about the eruption’s date and sequence comes not from written testimony but from the archaeology itself: layers of ash and pumice, carbonised food, the weight of clothing found on bodies, and a scrap of charcoal graffiti whose exact date has become central to a live dispute.
Why the second day killed more than the first
The eruption’s destructiveness came from its two distinct phases. The initial column of ash and pumice, though it collapsed roofs and made escape difficult, was survivable for people who left early or sheltered adequately, and around a third of the recovered dead at Pompeii were found in this earlier ash-fall rather than the later flows. The second phase, a sequence of dense, superheated flows racing down the mountainside at temperatures high enough to kill within moments, accounted for the majority of deaths and struck with far less warning, since those who had stayed through the first day’s rain of pumice, believing the worst had passed, had no comparable chance to flee once the flows began. Distance from the volcano mattered enormously: the town of Misenum, considerably further away, suffered darkness and falling ash but no comparable destruction.
An August date built on a single copied page
The eruption’s exact date remains genuinely disputed rather than settled. The traditional 24 August date rests on a single printed edition of Pliny’s letters from 1508, itself a copy of a copy, and modern scholars increasingly favour an autumn date based on finds such as heavier clothing on victims, unharvested autumn produce like pomegranates and chestnuts still in shops, and wine jars sealed in a manner consistent with late-season fermentation. A 2018 discovery of graffiti apparently dated to mid-October briefly seemed to settle the question, but a later study questioned whether charcoal writing could plausibly have survived exposed for over a year before the eruption, so historians now treat the autumn dating as likely rather than proven outright. Whether an earthquake during the eruption itself contributed to building collapses, alongside the ash and flows, is also still being examined by recent excavation.
A buried city that taught volcanology its own name
Pliny the Younger’s detailed description of the eruption’s rising column, likened to the shape of a pine tree, gave volcanology the term Plinian eruption, still used to classify large explosive eruptions of this kind. The disaster’s chief legacy, though, is archaeological rather than scientific: because ash sealed the towns so completely and so quickly, Pompeii and Herculaneum preserved an unusually intact cross-section of everyday Roman urban life, from bakeries and food stalls to wall graffiti recording the spoken Latin of ordinary residents rather than the formal language of literary texts. Rediscovered from the sixteenth century onward and excavated systematically from the eighteenth, the sites have shaped how historians and the public alike picture Roman daily life, and both are now UNESCO World Heritage sites drawing millions of visitors each year.
A disaster still being re-dated
The eruption is worth attention as much for what it reveals about the limits of a single eyewitness account, one letter, written decades later, carrying most of the narrative weight, as for the disaster itself.
