Around 1440, working in Strasbourg and then Mainz, the German goldsmith Johannes Gutenberg developed a system of printing using reusable metal type, combining existing technologies, the screw press, a book format already in use, and a supply of relatively cheap paper, with his own innovations in casting durable type and formulating an oil-based ink suited to it. The clearest early evidence of the project comes from a 1439 lawsuit that mentions his types, moulds and stock of metal, showing the work was already underway years before his most famous product, a 42-line Bible, was completed around 1455 in an edition of roughly one hundred and eighty copies. From that single workshop, printing spread rapidly: by 1480 presses were operating in well over a hundred European towns, and by 1500 European presses had produced more than twenty million printed items in total.

Historians also debate how directly Gutenberg’s invention caused later upheavals it is often credited with, particularly the Reformation: recent research comparing towns with early printing presses to those without finds a strong statistical association with the later spread of Protestantism, but most historians now treat printing as one contributing channel among several rather than a single decisive cause on its own.
