A tutor’s son becomes Athens’s second teacher
Aristotle was born in 384 BC in Stagira, in northern Greece, the son of a physician connected to the Macedonian court. At seventeen or eighteen he joined Plato’s Academy in Athens and remained there for roughly two decades, until Plato’s death prompted his departure. He spent several years afterward at the Macedonian court, tutoring the young Alexander before his conquests began, then returned to Athens in 335 BC to found his own school, the Lyceum, where he lectured and directed research for the next twelve years. Across that career he wrote on logic, physics, biology, ethics, politics, rhetoric and poetry, producing what ancient tradition remembered as an enormous body of work. He left Athens again in 322 BC, reportedly wary of anti-Macedonian feeling after Alexander’s death, and died within the year at Chalcis, in his early sixties.
A corpus assembled by other hands
Little of what survives is autobiography. Ancient biographies of Aristotle, including one by Diogenes Laertius written centuries later, mix reliable detail with anecdote, and modern historians treat them cautiously. The philosophical texts under his name pose a separate problem: most read like lecture notes rather than finished books, and scholars think they were shaped, and in places assembled, by students and later editors rather than published by Aristotle himself. Ancient tradition held that his papers passed after his death through his successor Theophrastus and a private owner in Asia Minor before resurfacing in Rome, where the scholar Andronicus of Rhodes organised the logical works into a set later called the Organon around 40 BC. Roughly a third of his output is thought to survive at all; the polished dialogues he wrote for a wider public are almost entirely lost, known only through fragments and later quotation.
Form found inside things, not above them
Aristotle broke with his teacher Plato on a basic point: rather than treating forms as existing apart from things, he argued that the form of an object is realised within the object itself, knowable through observation of the physical world around him. That commitment led him toward systematic empirical study, dissecting animals, cataloguing species, tracing how structure served function, and toward the logical apparatus, built on the syllogism, that he used to organise inference generally. He explained change through a scheme of four causes, material, formal, efficient and final, asking not only what a thing is made of but what purpose it serves. This emphasis on observation and purpose, unusual among his contemporaries, gave his output its distinctive range: he wrote as easily about marine biology as about tragedy, ethics or the constitutions of Greek city-states, treating each as fit subject for the same patient method.
How much of it is really his
Historians disagree about how much of the surviving corpus reflects Aristotle’s own finished thought against later compilation by students, and about how reliable the lecture-note format is as a guide to what he actually argued. His departure from the Academy in the late 340s BC is usually explained by dissatisfaction with its new leadership, though some historians think growing hostility toward Macedonians in Athens played a part as well. Claims about a personal rift with Alexander, including a later allegation that Aristotle had a hand in poisoning him, rest on evidence that surfaced only years afterward and are not generally credited by historians. Scholars also debate how to characterise his method: he did not conduct experiments in the modern sense, and whether his systematic observation should count as an early scientific method or something categorically different remains a live question among historians of science.
Two thousand years as the default authority
Aristotle’s physics and logic dominated formal education across the Mediterranean and Islamic worlds for close to two thousand years. Islamic philosophers, who called him simply the First Teacher, transmitted and commented on his texts through the medieval period, and that tradition fed back into Latin Europe, where Thomas Aquinas built much of Christian scholastic philosophy around Aristotelian categories, referring to him as the Philosopher without needing to name him further. His account of motion and the physical world was not seriously challenged until the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, when Galileo and later Isaac Newton replaced it with a different physics, and his syllogistic logic remained the standard teaching of the subject until nineteenth-century mathematicians developed alternatives to it. Few thinkers before the modern era shaped as many separate fields of enquiry, from biology to literary criticism, for so long.
A case study in how ideas survive
Reading about Aristotle means reading about a body of work assembled and transmitted by other hands as much as about the man himself, and that condition is part of what makes the case interesting rather than a flaw to look past. The gap between his enormous, curious, occasionally mistaken body of observation and the tidied-up authority later centuries gave it is where most of the real argument sits. Readers drawn to the history of ideas, or to how a text’s survival shapes what later generations think its author believed, will find the material genuinely rewarding to work through. Readers wanting a straightforward biography, with clean chronology and settled, uncontested facts, will find the sourcing considerably thinner than expected for a figure this famous, and should adjust their expectations before starting.
