One year, four papers
Born in Ulm in 1879, Albert Einstein completed his physics doctorate at the University of Zurich in 1905 while working as a technical examiner at the Swiss Patent Office in Bern, a position that left him time to pursue his own theoretical work outside the university system. That year, later called his annus mirabilis, he published four papers addressing the photoelectric effect, Brownian motion, special relativity and the equivalence of mass and energy, any one of which would have been a significant career achievement on its own. He held a series of academic posts across Switzerland, Germany and briefly Prague before settling at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute in Berlin from 1914, then emigrated to the United States in 1933 as Nazi persecution of Jewish academics intensified, taking a position at Princeton’s Institute for Advanced Study for the remainder of his life.
A Nobel for the wrong reason, sort of
Einstein’s scientific record is unusually well preserved, drawing on his original 1905 dissertation, extensive published papers, and correspondence archived and progressively released by Hebrew University of Jerusalem, which holds his papers as the institution he helped found. His personal correspondence has a more complicated release history: letters concerning his first marriage and other relationships were not made fully public until 1987 and again in 2006, decades after his death in 1955, revealing details his earlier biographers had not had access to. This staggered release means the standard scholarly picture of Einstein’s private life has changed meaningfully within living memory, even as his scientific contributions have remained settled and uncontested since shortly after they were first published.
A wife whose contribution is disputed
Einstein married the physicist Mileva Marić in 1903, and the extent of her contribution to his early theoretical work remains genuinely disputed among historians, with some finding evidence that her scientific training influenced his thinking during their years together and others arguing the evidence does not support a significant shared authorship. Their first child, a daughter named Lieserl born in 1902 before their marriage, disappears from surviving correspondence after infancy; Einstein’s own later letter speculated she was either given up for adoption or died of scarlet fever, but no independent documentation confirms either outcome, leaving her fate one of the more striking gaps in an otherwise thoroughly documented life.
A daughter who disappears from the record
Einstein divorced Marić in 1919, under a settlement requiring any future Nobel Prize money go to her, and married his cousin Elsa Löwenthal the same year. Letters released by Hebrew University in 2006 documented subsequent relationships with several other women during this second marriage, correspondence that had not previously informed public understanding of Einstein’s personal conduct. His son Eduard was diagnosed with schizophrenia in early adulthood and spent much of his life in institutional care, a difficult family circumstance that receives less attention than Einstein’s scientific biography but is documented through family correspondence and medical records from the period.
Letters kept from view for decades
Einstein’s political engagements are more straightforwardly documented than his private life. During the First World War he signed a pacifist counter-manifesto opposing German nationalist scientists’ support for the war, and after settling in the United States he became a citizen in 1940, having already fled Nazi Germany in 1933. In 1939, alarmed by the possibility that Germany might develop nuclear weapons, he endorsed a letter to President Roosevelt describing the danger, a document that contributed to the eventual establishment of the Manhattan Project, an outcome Einstein, who took no direct role in the weapon’s development, later expressed regret over having helped set in motion.
A warning that helped build the bomb
Einstein rewards attention on two separate registers that rarely receive equal treatment. The scientific record, from the 1905 papers through the 1915 general theory of relativity, is exceptionally solid and largely uncontested, having reshaped physics in ways that remain foundational a century later. The personal record is far messier and only became fully visible decades after his death, once archives in Jerusalem released correspondence that complicated the tidy public image built up during his lifetime. Reading both together, rather than treating the second as incidental to the first, gives a more accurate sense of how a scientific reputation as towering as Einstein’s can coexist with a personal history that took generations to become fully known.
