Al-Biruni

A scholar who may have arrived in Ghazni as a prisoner of the sultan who conquered his homeland went on to write the most even-handed medieval account of India that survives, sponsored by the same military campaigns that made study of it possible.

He spent his first quarter-century in Khwarazm studying jurisprudence, mathematics, astronomy and philosophy before political upheaval sent him travelling among courts in Bukhara and Tabaristan. Following Mahmud of Ghazni’s conquest of Khwarazm in 1017, al-Biruni was brought to Ghazni, where he became court astrologer and accompanied Mahmud’s campaigns into India, eventually producing his best-known work, a study of Indian civilization, around 1030, alongside treatises on astronomy, geodesy, pharmacology and mineralogy.

Much of what is known about al-Biruni comes from his own prolific writing rather than from contemporaries describing him, since he catalogued 103 of his own works by the age of sixty-five, organised into roughly a dozen categories including astronomy, chronology and astrological instruments. Other scholars dispute that label, arguing his work fits more precisely within traditions of comparative theology and historical geography current in his own time, without the conceptual framework later associated with anthropology as a discipline. The German orientalist Eduard Sachau, in an assessment widely cited by later scholars, described al-Biruni’s Indian research as an island of calm, impartial inquiry amid a period of considerable regional violence.

Among his scientific achievements, al-Biruni devised a trigonometric method for calculating the Earth’s radius by measuring the height of a mountain and the angle of dip to the horizon from its summit, arriving at a figure of roughly 3,928.77 miles against a true mean radius of about 3,847.80 miles, an error of about two percent. The method could not account for atmospheric refraction, which introduced a separate source of inaccuracy of around twenty percent in the underlying angular measurement, even though the final result happened to land close to the correct value. He also developed hydrostatic balances to measure the density of metals, gems and even air, work that influenced later experimental science.
