A scholar catalogued his own life’s work by sixty-five
Al-Biruni was born on 4 September 973 in Kath, in the region of Khwarazm in what is now Uzbekistan, and died on 9 December 1048 in Ghazni, in modern Afghanistan. He spent his first quarter-century in Khwarazm studying jurisprudence, mathematics, astronomy and philosophy before political upheaval sent him travelling among courts in Bukhara and Tabaristan. Following Mahmud of Ghazni’s conquest of Khwarazm in 1017, al-Biruni was brought to Ghazni, where he became court astrologer and accompanied Mahmud’s campaigns into India, eventually producing his best-known work, a study of Indian civilization, around 1030, alongside treatises on astronomy, geodesy, pharmacology and mineralogy.
Known through his own writing more than through others’ testimony
Much of what is known about al-Biruni comes from his own prolific writing rather than from contemporaries describing him, since he catalogued 103 of his own works by the age of sixty-five, organised into roughly a dozen categories including astronomy, chronology and astrological instruments. Several works, including one on the history of Khwarazm, survive only as quotations preserved in later historians such as Bayhaqi, rather than as complete texts. His reputation was not widely built upon in the centuries immediately after his death; it was largely dormant until scholars working during the period of British rule in India rediscovered and translated his study of Indian civilization, reintroducing his work to wider study.
A conquest that made his court, and possibly his captivity
Al-Biruni’s most productive period followed directly from Mahmud of Ghazni’s military campaigns. After Mahmud’s forces conquered Khwarazm in July 1017, al-Biruni was taken to Ghazni, possibly as a prisoner, and there rose to the position of court astrologer, later accompanying Mahmud’s repeated invasions of India from 1017 onward. Those campaigns gave him direct access to Indian scholars, texts and the Sanskrit language, which he learned in order to consult Hindu sources on their own terms rather than through intermediaries. His scholarship on India was therefore made possible by, and dependent on, the same military conquest that had disrupted his own homeland years earlier.
Anthropologist, or simply an unusually careful outsider
Assessments of al-Biruni’s place in intellectual history differ on how to categorise his approach to India. The scholar Akbar Ahmed has credited him as history’s first anthropologist for his systematic, comparative study of Hindu belief and custom, learning the language and consulting texts directly rather than relying on hearsay. Other scholars dispute that label, arguing his work fits more precisely within traditions of comparative theology and historical geography current in his own time, without the conceptual framework later associated with anthropology as a discipline. The German orientalist Eduard Sachau, in an assessment widely cited by later scholars, described al-Biruni’s Indian research as an island of calm, impartial inquiry amid a period of considerable regional violence.
A radius of the Earth, calculated from a mountain
Among his scientific achievements, al-Biruni devised a trigonometric method for calculating the Earth’s radius by measuring the height of a mountain and the angle of dip to the horizon from its summit, arriving at a figure of roughly 3,928.77 miles against a true mean radius of about 3,847.80 miles, an error of about two percent. The method could not account for atmospheric refraction, which introduced a separate source of inaccuracy of around twenty percent in the underlying angular measurement, even though the final result happened to land close to the correct value. He also developed hydrostatic balances to measure the density of metals, gems and even air, work that influenced later experimental science.
Worth reading for the deliberate fairness of his method
Al-Biruni’s Indian study is most striking for the working method he stated for it directly: presenting Hindu theories as they were held, then setting comparable Greek theories alongside them, so readers could see the relationship between the two rather than having one tradition judged by the other’s standards. That deliberate evenhandedness, unusual for a scholar working under a patron who had led military campaigns into the very region he was studying, is what makes his work worth returning to. Readers interested in how careful, comparative scholarship could exist inside the middle of conquest, rather than only after it, will find al-Biruni’s example unusually instructive.
